Cracked ice
Cubes broken into coarse chunks, usually against the back of a bar spoon. More surface than a glassful of cubes and less than crushed, so it chills quickly and lets the drink down harder than cubes do, without packing the glass the way crushed does.
The serve most nineteenth-century recipes mean when they say only ice.
