Gustave Tops
Belgian barman at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, where in 1949 he mixed vodka with coffee liqueur for Perle Mesta, the United States ambassador to Luxembourg and a hostess famous enough in Washington that Irving Berlin wrote a musical about her. She carried the drink home with her, which is how a two-ingredient cocktail made in a Belgian hotel became a standard.
