The Pithy Bar

Mirko Stocchetto

Born in Venice in 1931 and trained at Harry's Bar under Giuseppe Cipriani, he moved to Milan in the mid-1960s and took over Giuseppe Basso's bar on Via Plinio, keeping the old owner's name over the door. Bar Basso became the city's cocktail landmark and the design world's canteen, and he made more than a hundred drinks there, mixing by eye and never with a jigger. He designed the bicchierone, the thirty-centimetre glass the Sbagliato is still served in, now held by the design museum at the Triennale. He died in 2016. His son Maurizio, who runs the bar, says the famous mistake was nothing of the kind.
